Upper Snowy Riverkeeper
The mere mention of the Snowy River conjures up images of a beautiful, wild and free-flowing river. Yet, to the community of Dalgety, the river is now a symbol of the impact our past technological feats have had on the environment. Since construction of the Jindabyne Dam in 1967, natural flows of freshwater down the river have effectively been cut off, devastating the local tourism and agricultural industry and the rivers ecosystem.
Responding to the continuing loss of water, deteriorating river health and business loss within the region, the Dalgety and District Community Association (DDCA) formed in 1991. To restore the health of the Snowy River, experts recommend a pre-dam flow of 28%. For the DDCA, all they ask is that a flow sufficient for the river to function as a healthy ecosystem is delivered. This campaign and its aims remain today and forms the main focus of the group.
The group is based around Dalgety and districts, representing a cross-section of the community. The DDCA hosts the Upper Snowy Riverkeeper program, providing a voice for the Snowy River between the Jindabyne Dam to the Victorian border.
