Cooks Riverkeeper
The Cooks River is one of Sydney’s best kept secrets, with exquisite walkways running from Botany Bay through to Homebush Bay, amazing rock formations and magnificent foreshores. Yet the river suffers from serious pollution and poor management practices. Continuing the challenge to restore the river to its former glory are members of the Cooks River Valley Association (CRVA).
The CRVA’s origins go back to the formation of the Cooks River Improvement League in 1924. Fast forward to 2004 when members from a local community group with similar goals merged with the Cooks River Valley Association, reinvigorating its membership and bringing greater resolve and sense of purpose. This community-spirited group of residents is not only committed to the rehabilitation of the Cooks River, but also to improving the quality of life, facilities, environment, and the sense of community in the Valley.
The CRVA has held three very successful Cooks River Forums, where federal, state and local MPs and council representatives have met with hundreds of interested residents to discuss the river and the steps being taken to improve its health.
Many of our members meet on a monthly basis to clean up the river or undertake weeding or planting, and are known as the Mudcrabs. We also have members who give free local tours under the RiverLife programme. The CRVA has also participated in the annual Cooks River Festival and Riverworks Environment Sculpture Day.
Everyone is welcome to join the Association, for a modest $2.00 annual membership fee. CRVA meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 7.00pm, at the Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club.
