Benalla Lakekeeper

The Broken River winds its way from the Great Dividing Range to join the Goulburn at Shepparton, passing through the farming and service city of Benalla. At is passes though Benalla it widens to a picturesque lake with populations of Rakali, the native water rat. Unfortunately, there are high levels of contaminants in the run off into the lake, not to mention agricultural run-off up stream and a decline in river quality downstream. This will improve with the decommissioning of Lake Mokoan, but not all in town are happy with this.

The Benalla Lakekeeper, hosted by the Benalla and District Environment Group, works to reduce these threatening processes and improve water quality for the good of the water rat, and all others who and which depend on a healthy waterway. Isn’t that all of us?
